Loading Canadian (CHS & NDI) Charts with The CAPN

Created: 06/23/2006

DISCUSSION

In spring of 2007 the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) announced that it had assumed full responsibility of the Canadian digital charts, and in turn established a new product line of raster charts in the BSB format, replacing the previous NDI titles

Please use the following procedure to load Canadian CHS charts into The CAPN.
1. Install and Register the CHS CD. Insert the CHS Chart CD into the drive and follow all on-screen instructions to register the charts.

2. Open The CAPN and Copy the charts to the Hard Drive.
Open The CAPN, from the Charts menu, select “Copy Charts from CD”
Insert the CHS CD into the CD drive or click “OK” (if the CD is already in) when prompted to insert the chart CD.
A list of charts will populate in the upper window.
Click the “Select All” button, then “Copy Selected”.
The selected charts will now be copied to the C:\Bsbcarts directory.

Please note: Some of the new CHS charts may cause problems, in versions prior to v8.3.20a, due to their odd size.
If you are experiencing software crashes when loading these new CHS charts or after, please click here to download the latest update of The CAPN.

CHS Electronic Navigation Charts (ENCs) in the S-57 vector format are not supported in The CAPN.
Please read this related technical document regarding S-57 charts from CHS or NOAA and The CAPN.

NDI, the previous publishers of nautical charts for Canadian waters, used a different directory structure for storing its charts on the hard drive than suggested by the BSB specification. Thus, some applications (such as The CAPN) may have difficulty loading and using these charts.

Please use the following procedure to load Canadian NDI charts into The CAPN.
1. Install and Register the NDI CD.
Insert the NDI Chart CD into the drive and follow all on-screen instructions to register the charts for use and copy them to the hard drive. Do not alter the location where charts are to be stored.

2. Configure The CAPN to see the charts.
Start The CAPN. From the Charts menu, select "Set or Refresh Chart Paths." In the window that appears, click once on the yellow folder labeled "C:\". Then scroll down the list of folders and click once on the "Program Files" folder. Scroll down again and click on "Digital Ocean". The Digital Ocean folder will contain one (or more) folders - one for each NDI chart region you have installed. Click on the first folder, then the CA_CHARTS folder. A list of charts should appear to the right. Finally press "Add Path."

3. Repeat for other regions.
If you have additional Digital Ocean folders/regions, repeat this process. When all Digital Ocean folders have been added, press "Save This List." The CAPN will rebuild its table of Charts and Maps - and your NDI Canadian Charts will be available for use in The CAPN.
