United States Power Squadrons Courses

The United States Power Squadrons are the nation's largest boating organization, and are proud to be known as "America's Boating Club." Instructors are members from your local community that have been certified to teach courses that have been approved by NASBLA and your local state. Maptech recommends the following USPS courses:
The Squadron Boating Course:
Learn the fundamentals of boat handling, safety and basic piloting in one comprehensive classroom course. This course is accepted by most insurance companies and meets state specific and NASBLA requirements for certification.

Chart Smart:
Brush up on the fundamentals of navigation. "Chart Smart" covers the basics of plotting courses and determining your position. It includes a course book and a brief overview of electronic navigation.

Stu Bristol

Stu Bristol is very familiar with the "ins and outs" of Maptech software. He lives in Lyman, Maine, and has been a Freelance Outdoor Writer since 1968. A former Vermont Game Warden, Stu is now a Registered Maine Hunting Guide, a Registered Maine Fishing Guide and a Registered Maine Tidewater Guide. Stu teaches multiple workshops including Basic Land Navigation, Geocaching, and using GPS with Nautical Charts.

Rick Hood

Rick Hood is a long-time Maptech expert who has extensive practical knowledge of wilderness navigation and emergency response. He teaches programs for NASAR, ERI-International, and Rescue Response/Outdoor Education. Rick writes regularly for Advanced Rescue Technology and The Seattle Times. He is also the operator of Navigation Northwest and Hood Consulting and Services.
